Google’s Data Center Roadshow

After a successful tour in Europe, Google wanted to revamp their Data Center roadshow for a US audience and tour it across the country. With multiple agency partners in the mix, I was brought in by Pinpoint Productions to bring clarity, provide guidance, and help get this project across the finish line. To do so, I implemented the 3 D’s: Digest, Define, and Direct.

ROLE(S)

Creative Director

Strategy Consultant

Digest

The roadshow project was already underway, the clock ticking for when the client expected updates. To get caught up, I completely immersed myself in the world of Data Centers. I watched videos, browsed through websites, and listened to podcast episodes all to better understand what a Data Center is. The majority of the information learned never appeared in a deck but, in a client presentation, I found myself impressing them by randomly dropping factoids about fiber optic cables to further validate an idea.

Define

Two things had been approved by Google when I joined: a creative territory and the desire to feature the bulk of this experience in a shipping container.

My first order of business was to write a script outlining each touchpoint an attendee could encounter at this pop-up. Always referring to the approved concept, I described in detail how I envisioned every element coming to life. This included the overall layouts to content formats and even how sections should be designed. This added a much needed definition.

Scenic designers used my script to create visuals assets which were then inputted into a refreshed presentation deck for the client. With a track record of converting on new business pitches, I not only joined this meeting but led the client presentation.

At the end, I received the best feedback: “I didn’t want to interrupt with any of my questions because you were so engaging! This was great and reminds us why you’re the experts.”

I was later told the client increased their budget to ensure we could achieve all that was mapped out.

Direct

Once we were ready to get even more granular, I truly became the man in the middle of two agency partners.

To keep our project moving forward, I leveraged strong interpersonal communication skills, years of leadership, and an affinity for operational structures to keep our project moving forward. This meant delivering clear directives, reiterating deadlines, and identifying creative solutions whenever we reached an impasse.

At the conclusion of my contract, Pinpoint’s founder applauded my ability to be both encouraging and assertive.
